Important Enrolment Information Year 6 into Year 7

As Merewether High School is an Academically Selective School the enrolment process is different to the process outlined below:

  • for all Year 7 enrolment procedures please visit Selective High Schools. Please note that application for Year 7 enrolment at a Selective School must be made when the student is in Year 5. The entrance exam is conducted when the student is in Year 6.  
  • for latter year enrolment information read Merewether High Y8-Y12 Enrolment Policy
  • there is no entrance test for Year 8 to Year 12, positions are offered based on applications received and are subject to availability of a position

Entry into Year 7 2023

Due to covid and public health orders we were unable to hold our planned Year 5 Information Evening. The session outlines the procedures for applying to an academically selective school for entry in Year 7 2023. Please view our Y7 2023 / Y5 2021 powerpoint presentation outlining information about our school, the outstanding academic outcomes we achieve, the support we provide our high potential and gifted students and the extensive range of extracurricular activities on offer.

Entry to Years 8 - 12 

Applications for 2023 open on the Tuesday 21 June 2022 and close on the Friday 22 July 2022. The application form is available to download from the Selective High Schools website. It is suggested the following information be included with the application:

  • a covering letter
  • a copy of your child's birth certificate
  • proof of citizenship or permanent residency
  • copies of the last two years school reports - including first semester of current year
  • a copy of your child's most recent NAPLAN results
  • copies of academic awards
  • any other information which may assist the panel to assess your child's academic achievements

All appplications are considered by a panel consisting of the Principal, Deputy Principal and a parent/community representative. The panel meets in Term 3 and applicants will be advised of the outcome in Term 4. 

Waiting lists are established and these remain current until the end of Term 1 of the following year. A new application must be lodged each year if you wish to be considered for future placement.

How to enrol

Apply online. If you are an Australian or New Zealand citizen or permanent resident you are eligible to complete the online enrolment application. You will then need to finalise the application at the school.

If you are not eligible or prefer not to enrol online, use the application to enrol (PDF 768.4KB) form. Please complete the form in English. A translated application to enrol may help you do this.

Out-of-area enrolments

As outlined in the department’s enrolment policy, our school may accept enrolments from outside our local enrolment area if places are available.

We will assess applications for non-local enrolment on a case-by-case basis.

Distance education

Distance education is an equity program for students who are geographically isolated or whose individual circumstances prevent them from regularly attending school. Students must meet one of the conditions in the Distance Education Enrolment Procedures to be eligible to access this program as a full-time student.
