Principal's Report

Principal Rochelle Dooley

During the last couple of weeks Mrs Crooks, Ms Corney, Mr Byrnes, Mrs Johnson, Mr Berry, Mr Horrell, Mr Southward, Ms Morrow, Mrs Reilly and myself have interviewed all Year 12 students to discuss their current academic achievements and aspirations.

We have been very impressed with many Year 12 students, their honesty and willingness to discuss their current position and the areas they need to concentrate on over the rest of their time with us to maximise their outcomes.

We are continually looking at the ways we can continue to support Year 12 as they move towards the HSC. The Independent Learning Centre is open to support senior students for their use in private study. This year we have employed Mrs Corney to provide specialised English support through learning seminars and individualised assistance. Those students who have elected to have a mentor are encouraged to continue their scheduled meetings and maintain their work in establishing good routines and study habits.

We are currently undertaking a review of our curriculum and timetable. Members of the Executive team have commenced background work in reviewing our current curriculum, timetable structure and mandatory requirements of both the Department and NESA.

The purpose of the ‘Curriculum and Timetable Review’ is to inform the continuation or development of a quality curriculum structure, systems and practices within the school that enhance quality teaching, learning outcomes and wellbeing.

This evaluation is a planned process of gaining feedback and engaging the broader school community in reflecting upon what the school is doing to improve student learning outcomes and achieving excellence.

In the coming weeks, surveys will be sent out to students and parents to collect further evidence that will be considered as part of the Review Team’s recommendations. The surveys will ask for feedback regarding areas such as the day structure, elective pattern, student learning and wellbeing, BYOD and Learning Management Systems.

The end of term is an extremely busy one with students completing exams and teachers marking, providing feedback and writing reports. Years 7, 8 and 9 will receive their reports in the last week of term and Year 11 theirs at the end of Week 8.

Year 10 will receive their reports in Term 3, Week 3. Year 10 exams finish the second last week of this term and for staff to have time to mark, give feedback and write reports we need to carry this timeline across the holidays.

Parent teacher interviews will be held for Year 11, Thursday 23 June; Years 7 and 9 Tuesday 28 July, Years 8 and 10, Thursday 4 August. Emails will be sent to parents to book appointments for these interviews.

The last day of the term is Friday 1 July. Term 3 will commence for all students on Tuesday 19 July. Monday is a timetabled School Development Day for all staff across our school.

The SDD will be focused around our MHS HSC Success Strategy. The professional learning that will be undertaken by school staff will aim to strengthen teaching staffs’ ability to identify the discriminating features of high achievement in each HSC subject.

Staff will be involved in creating and evaluating high-quality teaching resources and selecting and implementing evidenced based high-leverage teaching strategies. Our HSC Success Strategy supports staff to identify interventions and modify their teaching practice, to enable students to develop problem solving and critical and creative thinking skills.
