Parent portal

Welcome to the Homepage for parents, carers, and friends of Merewether High School

Students flourish when parents and carers are actively engaged in their learning, and the partnerships we build today shape their future success. Our parent and carer community makes a substantial contribution to school life through consistent involvement and support.

At Merewether High School we use parent portal apps to streamline communication and administration, making it easier for families to stay informed, connected and involved in their child’s education. These tools help you:

Technology and BYOD

Bring Your Own Device

Our Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) policy is governed by three simple expectations:

  1. technology is a tool for learning, not the tool of learning
  2. the right device for the right setting
  3. digital citizenship is as important as digital literacy

Technology is a tool for learning, not the tool of learning. While your student will utilise their BYOD technology at school most days, it must be understood that the device will not be used in all lessons every day. Technology is a tool used to enrich and widen learning opportunities and to supplement strong, established pedagogy in the classroom. The use of your student’s BYOD device will be supported through the implementation of our new unified Learning Management System (LMS), Canvas. We will be working in the coming months to launch our new LMS to support students, staff and caregivers in the strengthened integration of technology and learning.

Students who currently own and utilise BYOD technology at school will not be required to purchase a new device as long as it meets the recommendations below.

Chromebooks

Chromebooks are not recommended as they are unsupported for National and State-based testing such as NAPLAN and Minimum Standards as well as ICAS for which BYOD is required.

Apple Devices

While a Windows device is recommended, they are not required. In using or purchasing an Apple Laptop you accept that no specific support will be provided by the school or the DoE. Also note that Apple iPads with an attached keyboard should not be purchased as they are unsupported for online testing.

General Software Requirements

  • web browser such as Google Chrome or Windows Edge
  • NAPLAN/Minimum Standards Lockdown Browser
  • ICAS testing browser

For specialist software in specialist subjects, the software vendor’s website should be considered for minimum and recommended system requirements before the purchase of any new learning device.

Connecting to the Network

Connecting your laptop device to the MHS wireless network:

  1. select ‘detnsw’ from your available wireless network list
  2. follow prompts to connect to this network with your usual student username and password e.g. John.Smith17
  3. once connected navigate to detnsw.net
  4. log in on the right hand side with your usual student username and password following instructions on the page
  5. now navigate to your desired webpage
