Language study allows students to develop communication skills, learn about languages as systems and explore the relationship between language and culture. Students engage with the linguistic and cultural diversity of societies and reflect on their understanding of social interactions. The study of a language is compulsory for 100 hours in one continuous school, preferably in Year 7 or Year 8.
The study of language opens the mind of a learner to appreciate difference and diversity in society. Proficiency in languages encourages more effective engagement within the global community. Learning an additional language strengthens a person’s understanding of their first language and enhances literacy skills.
The study of language and culture increases interest in the wider world, promotes intellectual and emotional development and cultural understanding. Through learning the language and culture of others, students better understand their own heritage, culture and identity.
