The term commenced with all teaching staff participating in an extended staff professional learning day which focused on our HSC Success Strategy. Teachers continued to engage with NESA band descriptions and worked collaboratively with faculty staff to refine their classroom practice in high leverage strategies. Course teachers commenced work on developing artefacts to further strengthen our students’ ability to evidence the discriminating feature and support their ability to access the highest performance bands in the HSC examinations.
It has also been wonderful to see the array of opportunities and experiences that have already been afforded to our students. Our annual school athletics carnival was an incredible success with students actively participating and competing in a range of track and field events. Additionally, it has been fantastic to have our parents and carers able to join us onsite and celebrate our students’ achievements. The CAPA faculty and our very talented student musicians, vocalists and actors entertained a very appreciative audience at the recent CAPA Ensemble evening.
Significant building works continued throughout the first term. This included a new roof being installed on G Block and the upgrade of L Block. It is with great delight that I can inform our school community that L Block was finalised this week and students have now commenced timetabled classes in the vastly improved learning spaces. Furthermore, both the male and female toilets have had a considerable makeover which has been very well received by our student body. The Bensley Hall has also had three electronic roller doors installed on both sides to allow for increased ventilation and support the movement of students into, and out of, this space. As Term 2 progresses, building works will continue onsite to ensure that the that our students have access to high quality learning spaces and improved facilities.
As the weather begins to cool, it is important that all our students have access to correct school uniform. Our school uniform distinguishes our students as proud members of the Merewether High School community. Members of the wider community form opinions of the school by the way our students wear their uniform and the way they behave on public transport, in shopping centres and other community venues. Whenever a young person is seen wearing our uniform, they are representing the school, our proud traditions of excellence and all that we stand for. I would kindly ask that parents support the school in ensuring we maintain our high standard of uniform.
Parent teacher interviews will be held for Year 12 on Tuesday, 17 May3.30pm-5.30pm. We look forward to our parent community attending this evening and working with HSC teachers to support our students’ learning and academic success.
